Jesse’s Ross Gazette column: Celebrating Rural Champions

It was a delight last week to welcome Two Farmers Crisps to Westminster, where they were crowned national Rural Enterprise Champions at the Countryside Alliance Awards.

The “Rural Oscars” have been won by several shops and businesses from Herefordshire, and every year what is so impressive is the diversity and innovation shown by all the entrants.

Last year Sonya and Nigel Cary of Pontrilas were named champions in the Village Shop and Post Office category. And this year the same energy was on display with Two Farmers of Peterstow.

They source their ingredients locally, either from Herefordshire farms or from produce from the surrounding areas, and have supported their business with major investment in plant and equipment.

But they have added a vital twist of their own, by creating crisp bags which are 100% compostable.

The Government is doing a huge amount to reduce the use of plastic bags and packaging, banning microbeads, plastic straws and stirrers.

But there is much more that businesses could be doing themselves.

At a time when environmental issues are shaping so much of the public agenda, Two Farmers are showing a local way forwards. Huge congratulations and thanks to Mark Green and Sean Mason, and their teams.
