A traditional village pub has been voted HR9 pub of the year in Jesse Norman MP’s 2014 Discover Ross competition.

The Red Lion in Peterstow is run by Dave Rapson and Kath Fisher, who took up the reins again in August 2012. Dave cooks, whilst Kath takes care of the front of house. The couple also employ around 12 staff.

Dave said: “We are delighted to have won it, and I want to thank all the locals who wrote such nice comments about us and the pub”. The pub received particular praise for Dave’s cooking, the child- and dog-friendly atmosphere and for having a roaring fire on colder days.

Second place went to the Kings Arms (formerly Connolly’s Bar) on Gloucester Road in Ross-on-Wye. The pub, which has just had a refit, was noted for supporting live music and local darts teams.

And a well-deserved third place went to the Weston Cross Inn in Weston-under-Penyard, which was popular for its extensive menu, sunny garden and well-kept beers.

The Red Lion’s award marks the end of the third and final round of MP Jesse’s Discover Ross competition. A special presentation was held at the Ross May Fayre on Sunday 25th May, where Jesse presented prizes to the winners of each round, and to the members of the public who had made the best nominations.

Speaking after Sunday’s presentation, Jesse said: “Independent businesses form the backbone of the local economy and help to make Herefordshire special.

“I would encourage everyone to drop by the winning HR9 businesses – the Golden Crust, Pots and Pieces and the Red Lion -- to congratulate them on their achievements and to find out for themselves why local people love them.”
